Dawn. Gulls wheeled overhead, but she could ignore their cries, could reconcile the sea’s ponderous rhythms as soothing noise, not pounding heartbeats. The sea-longing had been tamed… oh she could understand it, but it didn’t control her, cause her to desire the ocean… nor yearn for the West.
No – she’d delighted in her journeying, forged new friendships, alliances, but she’d return to the woodland realm… she’d been away long enough. The King’s son would welcome her with formal words… they could again be comrades-in-arms… nothing more.
Their small party headed east, she hared ahead, running swift and light over dew-wet meadow.
