Sounds Like - Hairbreadth: "Reckless Vigilance"

Title: Reckless Vigilance
Author: Ithiliel Silverquill
Challenge: Sounds Like - Hairbreadth
Characters: Elrond, Glorfindel
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Book/Source: LotR, referencing The Silmarillion
Disclaimer: I own nothing, and just build card-castles in Tolkien's long shadow.

“The scouts tell me,” Elrond said, frowning and crossing his arms, “that you didn’t signal the orcs’ presence until you felled half of them yourself.”

Glorfindel shrugged. “I didn’t raise alarm until I was alarmed.”

“You didn’t raise alarm until you were a hairbreadth from being overwhelmed. Why do you constantly take such risks?” He sighed. “We are in no danger of Balrogs here.”

Glorfindel’s jaw tightened. “Neither was Gondolin. Until it was.”

Elrond hesitated. Finally he dismissed Glorfindel with, “Just… be careful.”

But the words haunted him: distant memories of a fallen city, and an evil that never slept.
