Old English Writings challenge: Riddle: 'Riddles in the Sunshine'

Title: Riddles in the Sunshine
Author: Kortirion
Character: Hamfast Gamgee (Gaffer) and son
Rating: G
Source: Pre-Ring War
Disclaimer: Tolkien introduced us to these folk – they are all his friends first and foremost.

“Well, were a rum do, if y’ask me” Hamfast Gamgee settled on his favourite stool by the potting bench. “And riddle me this, what comes of young ’uns out all night, cavorting ‘round the countryside with Elves? Elves mind you – not even rapscallion Rangers!”

Gamgee puffed his pipe… his gardening companions nodded sagely. There was no riddle here… nothing good came of Elves in the night.

His eldest babe listened avidly, hoping they’d forget he was there.

“Talking strange too, they said.” someone remarked.

Later, the tot bowed low to a Sunflower.

“My-Goov-Anon”, he lisped solemnly, practising his newly acquired ‘elfish’.
