It was almost Osred’s birthday. The Rohirrim rarely bothered with such celebrations except as small children, or when they came of age.
But, Grandmother thought, the lad deserved something, having taken so much onto his young shoulders when father and grandfather had answered the call to muster at Dunharrow.
New boots, she’d thought, but he was still growing; they would soon become too small, and benefit Edric more.
As well to keep wearing his father’s; he almost filled them now, in many ways. Fifteen in a week he might be – but he had, of necessity, become a man too soon.
