“As I rode out one morning bright
A fair maid I did spy…”
The elderly hobbit warbled… a little off-key, while the tavern’s customers listened politely.
“Her hair was curled, her feet were crimped,
A twinkle graced her eye…”
“Did he say rowed, or rode? Pippin’s stage-whisper wasn’t quiet.
“I dunno. Does it matter?” Merry replied
“Well if he ‘rowed out’ he was in a boat, and she’d be a mermaid.”
“Can’t have been - her feet were crimped.”
“True. But maybe they weren’t feet - could have been fins…”
...And then they realised the whole tavern was listening to them.
