In the Deep Places of the World …

Gimli was eager to show his friend the intricately carved tunnels and vast, echoing caverns of the glittering caves, but knew that for strange, unfathomable reasons of his own, Legolas grew twitchy if kept underground and away from leaf and bark for too long.

“So?” he demanded, as they stood once more at the doors of Aglarond. “Where would you like to go today?”

Legolas gazed upwards at the trees, breathing deeply. “The beeches,” he murmured.

Gimli looked at the wooded slopes, then to the desolate, treeless shores of the lake. “Beaches. Of course.”

Would he ever understand the elf?
