Barliman's Memories

"I've met 'em all, now," Barliman mumbled to his audience gathered near the hearth. The inn's common room was crowded and the barmaids were stepping lively as they delivered food and drink to its patrons.

"Strider, the King, he sat there, in the shadows. The four Hobbits stayed only one fear-filled night, then left wi' 'im. Gandalf followed later. My brew's been uncommon good since his comin'."

His second son now ran the place; his eldest had followed the King south. No matter, he had children aplenty.

"But when the Hobbits returned, they wore swords and mail, and feared nothin'."
