Rumors and Raising Faunts - 2 Drabbles by Erulisse (oe L)

I realize that I used Sam Gamgee in the previous prompt for Gardener, but he wanted to continue playing. So I have two drabbles for you for the prompt "Farmer". One features Farmer Maggot, the other our favorite gardener, Samwise Gamgee.

Title: Rumors
Challenge: Unsung Heroes: Farmer
Author: Erulisse (one L)
Characters/Pairing: Farmer Maggot
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Book/Source: The Lord of the Rings

Disclaimer: Tolkien built the sandbox, I only play with the bucket and shovel that he left for me. No money, profit or non, is made from the publication of this story.

Rumors

"Did ya' hear? Frodo Baggins walked all the way to the Black Gate and took on the Evil One with a broken sword and the branch o' a white tree?"

"Stop talkin' nonsense, woman. Aren't times hard eno' with the Big Ones takin' all our land and leavin' us to starve? If'n it hadn't been for Master Brandybuck and Tom Bombadill, we'd 'a all starved by now."

He went back to seeding potatoes into the newly plowed furrows.

"Look!" his wife screamed, pointing. "The Big 'Uns ha' come back!"

"Farmer Maggot?" a voice called. "It's Merry Brandybuck at your service."

And here's the second drabble...

Title: Raising Faunts

Author's Note: I stretched the topic slightly to be gardener instead of farmer. I suppose I could run a quick Farmer Maggot post out, but this is the one that spoke to me as I read the prompt, so I'm going with it.

Raising Faunts

"Mornin' Mr. Gamgee, and a bright one it is."

"Mistress Cotton," Sam said, standing up from planting petunias. "It's a fine day indeed, none better."

"I heard, sir, that your Rosie has had another babe? You have twelve now?"

"One more. Little Tolman is our thirteenth, and, I suspect, the last."

"And all of them gentlehobbits, respectful and hardworking. Tell me, Mr. Gamgee, how do you do it?"

They stood watching the younger hobbits playing nearby with balls and hoops. He smiled.

"Mistress, it's nothin' much. I just let'm be and correct 'em when needful, just like a young tree."
