They felt as if there should be more and tonight I went back and wrote a third.
I have put the original two here as well, to save you going back to them.
Title; Night Time Musings

It was strange, the old Thain mused, the thoughts that came into one’s head in the small hours of the morning when everyone else slept.
Tonight he wondered what someone would have made of their tracks, all those years ago. Two sets with leather soles, one patched; one set smaller with hobnails; the hardly-there imprint of soft elven boots; and four pairs of hobbit feet (if the someone could distinguish between hobbit footprints) and… And whatever Gandalf had worn on his feet.
Now what footwear had the old wizard worn?
Still considering this puzzle, Thain Pippin drifted back to sleep.
He missed her still. He lay, even yet, on the left side of the bed as if she might slip under the covers sometime in the night and into his arms.
Somehow Pippin had never thought of a life without Diamond. He had taken care to ensure her life would be easy after his death, with no thought for the long years alone that he had faced after her too-early death.
Perhaps he would take up the offer of a home in Gondor, let Faramir become Thain; down south the empty side of the bed might not be so cold.
Another night of restless sleep, if sleep it could be called.
The room was cold, the fire almost dead. Outside the night was cold, with snow on the ground, and Pippin was also suffering with cold – a cold that had stuffed his nose so he couldn’t breathe and now lay on his chest so that he woke himself coughing.
He sipped the turnip syrup Goldilocks had left; it helped a little.
Then he decided the time had come. When spring arrived he would turn everything over to Faramir, send letters ahead, and go to Gondor where even winters were warmer.
