Character: Gaffer Gamgee
Source: Post–Hobbit, Pre-LotR
Disclaimer: Tolkien imagined it all in magnificent detail; Kortirion has stray thoughts.
Hot breezes brushed through the brown curls of his tired feet, propped now on the edge of a wheel-barrow. Leaning back on the old wooden bench, eyes closed in the midday sun, Gaffer Gamgee dozed contentedly. The creak of a branch and the rustling leaves lulled his senses after a morning’s hoeing and weeding.
Faintly, Bilbo and Frodo’s voices softly chanted something in foreign.
‘Pretty enough sounding – but stuff and nonsense’, thought Gaffer, ‘What did they want with all that adventuring when the Shire had everything a body could need? Good job my Sam’s got his feet on the ground.’
