The Astronomer

Title: The Astronomer
Author: SheBit
Source: LotR, Silm, possibly BLT as well.
Disclaimer: You know the drill - it's all Tolkien's, I just like to do some stargazing.
Author's Note: The other late Astronomy one. This was originally the second in a four drabble arc, but then I realised it really didn't go with the other three - for obvious reasons - so I extracted it.

The disks of polished glass moved smoothly as he twisted the burnished brass knob. He had not the skill in crafts of some of his best-forgotten forebears, but he felt some pride in this thing of brass and wood which he had shaped from nothing; the pride was something like those forebears, if not the craft.

The disks aligned, and he put a grey eye to the tube’s end. A smile softened his often grim countenance as the Elf lord spied a star gleaming brighter than its brethren, drifting ‘cross the velvet black sky.

“Fair winds on your voyage, father.”
