A Blow to the Heart

The minute I heard that racket, I knew my Sam was going to be heartbroken, if he ever came back from that foolish journey of his, o' course. Terrible it was; I'd lay money Ted Sandyman had a hand in it, the way he gloated.

Took the heart right out of Hobbiton, it did. Suppose that was the point.

Sure as eggs is eggs, when Sam seen what they did, he sat right down on that big stump and cried. He's soft-hearted sometimes, my boy, but I didn't say a word – Party Field sure don't look right without the tree.
