That wretched woman! Always meddling, always... there, watching.

Northerners – that other was the same, I knew those two talked about me. My wife, sweet innocent, defended the whore-bitch. ‘We were too much alike’, she said, ‘too much of the same fire made sparks between us’.

Market gossip and women’s nonsense, this doctrine of birth – simply because our birth-dates were close. Except I was born for Gondor, she in some northern pig-pen! I keep her only because my love had me swear a binding oath, on... something I would not desecrate with falsehood. Oh Finduilas, how I still burn for you!

There’s a strange saying in Harad, one I never understood before.

Some said a pyre was ignoble, but your brother thanked me for keeping your traditions. He wanted to take you back to the sea with him – I could not let you go. Fire at least leaves ashes, but the water would take you completely.

Everyone shed tears for you. She wept silently, a veritable flood - while I was dry as Harad’s sands. I envied her. My sons clung to her, marking her skirts with wet faces – even my Boromir... ‘gave water to the dead’.

Now, I understand – and weep.
