For Ribby, who said:
I do wonder, Aragorn being who he is, if there's some sort of private penance for all the lives that his kingship has changed irrevocably or taken.

The Penitent

When Elessar closes his eyes to sleep, he does not see the White Tree in flower, nor the glory of Gondor and Arnor restored; he sees the faces of those who gave their lives to that end. Those known and loved: Gilraen. Théoden. Halbarad. Boromir. Other faces and names, far past recall. Their sacrifice is not forgotten; his penance is to remember them, every night.

When Elessar has begged forgiveness of every shade, he hears at last a whispered voice:Cherished brother, revered captain, beloved king. The words brush over him like a kiss of peace; only then will he sleep.
