Pines were easy of course; Legolas began by distinguishing subtle larch from spruce, sweetly resinous Stone Pine from cedars, pungent junipers from yews - all by his father crushing the leaves beneath his nose as he stood, eyes closed and trusting, to inhale the tree’s essence. In time he could even distinguish between the ancient Lalorn... Black, Wych, Smooth, Mithren. The forests became a pomander of delicate greens...
But this... was like nothing he’d smelt before... intoxicating, alluring...
