Disclaimer: Tolkien filled the sandpit with sand and other things, and I like to play.
Author's Note: For the 'without' challenge. I'm not quite happy with it, but it refused to improve.
Without starlight, what is night,
But darkness before dawn?
Without music, what is Arda,
But grim and silent tomb?
Without wisdom, what is knowledge,
But a fell and deadly weapon?
Without courage, what is Man,
But a race of cowering slaves?
Without heroes, what is struggle,
But vain sacrifice for naught?
Without hope, what is life,
But uncertainty and fear?
Stars burn and Eldar sing,
That the world be not an empty place;
The Wise give counsel to them that listen,
And Captains lead their stalwart troops,
That evil not prevail;
Hope springs eternal,
That the world be not without.
