Disclaimer: Tolkien’s world… Kortirion’s words
Gimli searched the labyrinthine corridors of Moria… ‘Yes, they had stopped here...’ He found his mark, carved low-down on the wall; beyond... the ruined side-room where Boromir and Aragorn had passed the night.
There, tumbling from the living rock, a vein of shining iron-ore bubbled red, as if Arda breathed petrified blood from a chest-wound - Hematite, the warrior’s stone! Among his people it was highly-prized as mourning jewellery, its dark, liquid shine sombre, yet tactile.
It was fitting. No heart of stone was carved for Arwen, but for Aragorn, Gimli shaped a thumb-stone to rub, until it warmed in remembrance.
