"Boromir," the young hobbit said, holding up a coin. "You dropped this."

"My thanks, Merry."

As he caught up to the man, Merry examined the coin more closely. It was emblazoned with the profile of a man on one side.

"That's my father, the Steward Denethor." Boromir explained.

"He looks terribly stern." Merry mused.

Frodo reached over and cuffed him lightly on the head. "Manners, cousin."

"But he does! I should think he's happier when you're home and about, Boromir."

The Steward's eldest son took the coin silently; he strode ahead of the others for the rest of the afternoon.


Author's Note: This is what I write when I've spent the last week identifying ancient coins for a history lesson...
