The coins plopped loudly as they broke the water's calm surface. Once the fountain had rushed and gurgled, but now it was silent. There was much rebuilding to be done in the White City, but he would start here.

"Why cast the coins into the water?"

"It's tradition. Look." He pulled her toward the pool and she saw a thousand coins gleaming in the water. "You cast a coin and make a wish."

"And what was your wish, my love?"

He did not speak, but held her to him and placed a gentle kiss upon her mouth.

"It is granted."
