For the Chest Challenge

Wrinkling her nose, Eowyn lifted the shirt from the basket. “These linens smell most...strange. What do your folk use to cleanse them?” She draped the garment over a stone windowsill.

Faramir gave her a look of mild surprise. “Why water and fine clay and the leavings of the chamber pots. How else would it be done?”

“And you deem us the people of twilight?” Searching a chest, she found the soap scented with strong herbs. Then taking up the basket, she raised her chin proudly and swept from the room. “The truth will come out in the wash.”


Note: Pliny says that soap was popular among the "barbarian" tribes to the north, though it was little used among the Romans.
