Had he truly fallen?
Or merely freed himself from strictures of kin and clan?
He had always been different. His love of roots and beginnings had shifted his gaze downward – away from flower and tree and sky.

Away from life…?

Perhaps, for he could speak “my love”, and in the next breath stifle life.

But in its stead, he had found power in gilt symmetry.

And though, in the end, he had passed out of all knowledge…
It was still quite an improvement, really.

Except for the chink in the corner of his mind…
where the light streamed in.
