The carter shook the reins, even in summer’s twilight it wasn’t always safe to be abroad late. Topping the hill, he came upon two men; one examining his mount’s hoof. The carter was a good judge of horse-flesh, ‘...fine stock, expensive... moneyed men’. He’d slowed, before realising regretfully they were Rangers ‘...queer, difficult folk’.
“Evening, Masters... problem?”
One looked up, “He needs a shoe.”
“Smith’s at Bree. Bit out my way..."
“Would a silver penny help?”
“What? Your choice, Aragorn, buy a soft bed, or a long walk!”
The carter grunted ‘...not a richman then ...just two raggedy-arsed rangers!'
