The sea-wind had blown the blackness away, but night gave back the ruined city’s genuine shadows; a comforting darkness to partially obscure the ruined and sorrowful. Gandalf’s whites seemed to glow with shrouded light, but the grey-cloaked man beside him walked head bent and sombre. Now and again he touched a wall or column standing amid the destruction.
The citizens eyed them, but didn’t interrupt the powerful mage and hooded captain, a poor man by his well-worn clothes; they had their own concerns.
“The King,” they whispered, “We heard he’d brought a king... but there’s only a ragged captain here.”
