Despite his long years of service, Hamfast Gamgee still found Bilbo Baggins a mystery. The Master didn’t see the world as other hobbits did. Every path was a possible road to Adventure, every star told a story, and every tale, it seemed, should be put into song.
“Look at that sky, Ham,” Mr. Bilbo remarked softly one evening, standing on the front porch, pipe in hand. “Indigo velvet, embroidered with diamonds.”
“I don’t know about no velvet or jools, sir, but I’d prefer to see clouds—them cabbages need more rain.”
Ham packed up his tools, wondering at Mr. Bilbo’s sigh.
