The bard sang of Éomer King’s guests when they were the Ranger Captain and the golden-haired White Lady of Rohan.
No longer golden-haired, Éowyn thought – now the White Lady in every sense…
Then he sang of Legolas; how his hair had glinting as the sun on polished straw as he drew his mighty bow on the Deeping Wall, the Pelennor, and before the Black Gate.
‘No’, she thought, ‘never straw-like – a pale, more subtle, colour still. His hair is shaded like finest hay, sun-kissed in the morning. And, like hay, he brings a taste of summer, briefly, into these our winter-years.’
