In the lingering sunlight of the summer’s evening men still worked with scythes; the soft, rhythmic, swish unheard at this distance, but easily imagined. Women, and children, also made use of the warm evening to follow the reapers, gathering the long wheat stalks into stooks, an occasional peal of laughter heard, faintly, on the breeze by the two watching.
