The Leaves That Do Not Fall
The hobbits trudged along in miserable silence, kicking aside cold, wet leaves that clung to their feet and legs and smelled of damp and decay.
“I hate autumn,” Pippin moaned. “Why do the leaves always fall?”
Strider glanced back with a smile. “Not always,” he said softly. “In the land of Lothlórien there are trees where the leaves turn to gold, but do not fall. They remain until spring, when new growth begins.”
Sam brightened. “I’ve never heard of trees like that! I reckon I’d like to see them one day.”
“Perhaps you will, Sam. One day, perhaps you will.”
