A woodsman was only as good as his bow. Hazel and ash, oak and elm... he tried them and found each somehow deficient. He sought knowledge in the forest deeps.
The ancient tree grew dark and strong, with leaves like lances or arrow-fletchings, its berries red as his own blood, which mingled with the soil when he made his offering: his flesh for its flesh. Heartwood within, sapwood without-- Belthronding the mighty! – A weapon none but he had the strength to draw!
He would strive to be worthy of this bow: cunning, and doughty, and felled by no foe.
