“If Boromir was a tree... what’d he be?”

Pippin paused his whittling, looking expectantly to Merry for a bold and succinct answer. Merry looked blank.


“What tree? Legolas, he’s Beech, pale, graceful, golden leaves. Now Gimli’s bog-oak... found underground, hard, dark, but good to carve…

“Ooooooh... Boromir’s Oak then, definitely. Strong-hearted, magnificent... maybe a mite stiff and unbending...”

Pip giggled, “Strider?”

Merry considered.

“Holly... looks all dark, prickly and forbidding, but even if you think you’ve cut it down, the roots survive. It may be scruffy looking, but come Yule, it’s crowned in scarlet.”

Pip nodded, “Yes... the Holly-king...”
