Characters: Gimli, Legolas

Disclaimer: I do not own the characters, Tolkien does.
Earth was something Gimli understood: the comforting solidity of packed granite, the crumbled moisture of loose soil, the musty smell of underground caverns. Earth was safe; earth meant home.
Years of travelling with Legolas, Dwarf and Elf on a shared horse, and Gimli still did not understand his friend. Legolas glided on snow-clad ground and did not leave a print when Gimli trudged knee-deep and cursed the cold. Legolas surged trees like a squirrel; the one time Gimli tried treewalking, he almost fainted with fear.
Legolas was unfamiliar air consumed by the fire of Gimli’s curiosity; Legolas freed his mind.
