The painted wagons were always a draw when they fetched up near Bywater Pool. A ramshackle bunch of wandering Stoors, they’d sell you bright gee-jars or mend your pans... or empty your purse at games of chance!
Bilbo loved the swagger, the bright clothes – he envied and feared in level quantities... why, they travelled from Bree to Tower Hills and back!
Best of all was Grandam Nell’s strong tea, and afterwards she’d read your cup.
“Well young’un, I sees a ring... but no weddin’... but here’s a tall, dark stranger... and a journey...”
Bilbo grinned – that’s what they always said!
