It was custom in the North to stand at table before the daymeal and pass our beakers of wine or beer over the water-bowls. A solemnly muttered rumble of ‘over the waters, over the sea’ would sound, followed by a moments silence before all sat to eat.
The Standing Silence of Gondor was new to me, it took me by surprise. One may imagine the looks askance – why, my face was red as the wine!
Later, the Steward quietly motioned me aside to enquire of the custom. He nodded in understanding... but I doubt his son Denethor ever forgave me.
