A typical hobbit, Pippin knew his forebears for many generations; including all forty-two five times great-grandparents. In theory there should be sixty-four, but some appeared twice, or even more, when you got that far back.
Except that, when he said ‘knew’, he meant as names. That Lady Galadriel was Queen Arwen’s grandmother, though they appeared alike in age, fascinated him with the possibilities.
He questioned Legolas… closely. Eventually the elf yielded; explaining that he, personally, knew very few of his five times great kin. He left Pippin standing open-mouthed, however, having owned that a friend had a very desirable five-greats-aunt…
