Captain Thorongil reeked of the ocean. He’d bathe, change his clothes, but I could still smell it. When he bowed, I saw a prow dip, when he narrowed his eyes against the sun, I saw him framed in spin-drift... He breathed air into this sweltering Stoneland.
Sea-tang... it means wildness. It means danger... far horizons. Oh, he smiled, nodded, but his eyes were watchful, grey as winter-waters. A vagabond, a sell-sword, a masterless man - who’d want him as father to their child? He’d away soon as the wind changed!
But... He smelt like the ocean... he smelt like freedom.
