"A Slight Mistranslation..."

Sister? Gimli had a sister? They had been friends for years and he had not known that Gimli had a sister until word came that she had given birth?

Legolas thought to berate his friend for keeping her existence a secret, until he thought back over his only encounter with Gimli’s family… a face with a luxurious beard, laughing eyes…

Neither elves nor hobbits had facial hair dependant on gender, only men. Why had it not occurred to him that, in this, dwarves were like elves? Or that the dwarvish word, translated as ‘brother’, should rather be translated as ‘sibling’?
