Title: And Fire and Shadow Both Defied
Characters: Gandalf, Bilbo

And Fire and Shadow Both Defied
“I won't give my precious away, I tell you.”
He dares to threaten me? This furry-footed fool, this Halfling? He has no idea what may hang on this! The fate, perhaps, of all Middle-earth... I should take It, here and now, I who am servant of the Secret Fire, who have followed in the train of the Lord of Eagles; I shall show him Gandalf the Grey uncloaked! And then shall I make Sauron rue the day he turned to Morgoth...
“I don't know what has come over you, Gandalf.”
Such a small voice. And the shadow passes from me.
A/N: Bilbo's words at the beginning and end of the drabble are lifted directly from his conversation with Gandalf just before he leaves Bag End in "A Long-Expected Party".
