Through the open door Aragorn watched, silently, for a little.
The room’s two occupants, bent over some piece of work on the table, were too engrossed to notice him.
“But why?” he heard his son ask – it sometimes seemed as if these were the first words Eldarion had spoken, and he had used them many times a day since.
Firiel considered the question and answered carefully, without recourse to “because it is”, or “because I say so.”
Aragorn thought, again, how right his queen had been to defy all advice and choose as governess this “inexperienced slip of a girl”.
