Idril cradled the rare green sapphire in the palm of her hand. Where is this shadow I sense? she thought, sending the question deep into the heart of the jewel. In the center of the gem, a splinter of shadow formed. Idril watched the splinter take on familiar form. My cousin?

She cupped her hands over the elessar, shutting away the vision. Is it he, or the curse he carries from his mother"s kin?

The elessar showed her many things, yet never told her why. She looked to her son's cradle. And she had so very much to protect...

Legacy 2

Such small things, Nenya, the elessar. Both wrought by one of the Noldor's greatest jewelwrights. Both entrusted to her. Their weight dragged at her hand. She had not strength for both. Once, the elessar had been the wish of her heart. Now, shackled by Nenya, she must pass it on.

She turned to her daughter and took her hand. Closing Celebrian's fingers over the green sapphire in its ancient mounting of gold, she said, "This now I give to you. You will be the Lady of Imladris, and she must have farseeing eyes. An ancient legacy, now yours."

Arwen could not see the green gem her mother pressed into her hands. Her tears shrouded the world in a salty blur.

"Mother, you must keep it!" she protested, trying to hand it back. "Its healing--"

"My daughter," Celebrian said, her voice weary, "if there is no healing found in the place I am bound, no gem will save me. Yet you, who linger in these lands, may still have need of it."

Arwen pressed the elessar over her heart. Her tears did not cease. Its virtue must be spent, for she felt her heart would never heal.

Side note: yes, green sapphires actually do exist...found out about them while doing research for a Three Rings-related story. Quite beautiful stones.
