‘The Old Forest’ shire-folk called it, the great wood between the Baranduin and the Barrowdowns, the trees here were… different. Not as lofty as Lothlorien’s mellyrn, nor as dark as Mirkwood’s shadowed oaks and ash - save there was silver bark and golden leaves here… and dense, heavy-branched contorted trees.
Autumn had brought gilded bronze and copper… a warm blue sky overlaid with laced branches. Aragorn loosed the reins for his horse to find a path among the hummocks, Halbarad followed close behind. It should have been a pleasant day… yet… something stirred… Aragorn stared – ‘had that tree just …winked?’
