Characters/Pairing: Saruman, Sauron
Rating: G
Warnings: N/A
Book/Source: Lord of the Rings, Unfinished Tales

Summary: ". . . He has been persuaded from afar, and daunted when persuasion would not serve." --LoTR III.11. ‘Firelight’ challenge.

The fireplace glows and chatters amicably. Indifferent to its charms, Saruman slouches in an armchair with a volume titled Palantírion.

"No barrier exists, save thorough darkness, which may withstand the gaze of the palantír directed by a skilled practitioner."

The text bears out words recently spoken by the dark power via that same instrument.

«I’ll release you, yet I expect we shall speak again. Bear in mind that I know now your alias, your guise, and your location, and that the walls of Orthanc itself are no barrier to my curiosity. I would prefer to proceed on friendly terms, Saruman.»
