Summary: “Perilous to us all are the devices of an art deeper than we possess ourselves.” –LOTR III.11. ‘Lamplight’ challenge.
Meta: Curumo: Saruman’s name in Quenya.
Experts of old devised shields which appeared as darkness, into which palantíri could never see. Thus, had Curumo now succeeded in this, it would have gone undetected.
Curumo, however, never was good with darkness. Instead of casting shadow around the windowless chamber, he has succeeded only in halfhearted defiance of its light. Sauron sees him pacing and studying a scroll. Curumo never was good with light, either. The small room’s lamplight breaks upon the weak shield, scattering radiance of all wavelengths into the watcher’s sight.
Sauron squints, vision impeded but not denied. «Is this the greatest defiance you can offer?»
