A Gift of Life

Maglor stretched out his arms and found himself holding two adolescents trying to control their emotions.  Elrond was shaking, his eyes welling with tears.  Elros' body was stiff.  He was trying to distance himself from his grief at the upcoming separation.  Hugging them, Maglor kissed each boy on their forehead, then turned.

Maglor thought back to late night discussions with Maedhros regarding releasing the children to Círdan.  Finally Maglor's calm analysis of their uncertain futures if they remained with the sons of Fëanor had prevailed.  It had been decided to bring them near under cover of darkness, allowing them to make their own way the next day.

“Look below,” he commanded.  “There is where we will leave you.  You must then make your way eastwards to the town.  Once there, ask for Círdan or Gil-Galad.  Tell them you are Elwing's children, you will be safe.”

“Why must we leave you and Maedhros, Father?” was Elrond's tremulous query.

“We were bequeathed a terrible Oath by my Father,” he softly responded.  “Were you to stay with us, you also would be pulled into its malevolent netting.  I give you the only gift I can.  I give you life.”
