Title: Balin’s Colony – Year Five: Day Eighty-Nine
Author: Huinárë
Characters/Pairing: Balin
Rating: G
Warnings: n/a
Book/Source: The Fellowship of the Ring
Disclaimer: Characters belong to Tolkien.  No profit reaped by myself, aside from a wealth of intellectual giddiness.

Summary: Balin considers the progress of the Khazad-dûm colony.  Answering the prompt “Letter.”

To: Dáin, Lord of Erebor, King Under the Mountain
From: Balin, Lord of Khazad-dûm

Cousin, I’ve been remiss.  Often I composed missives, yet there was much labor here; I couldn’t spare a messenger to Erebor.  I hope to send Náli soon.  Exploration complete, I deem it safe to repeople our longfathers’ home.  There’s been no recent trouble excepting a small Orc foray, an isolated incident I believe, last month by Mirrormere.

Mirrormere!–wherein I ever crave to look.  They insist I not go unaccompanied.  Maybe you, being a proud one of Durin’s line, understand why I must go alone…
