Gríma shortly followed Éowyn onto the porch. Meduseld remained merrily behind, oblivious to both departures.
He feigned surveying the shadowed plains before “noticing” her presence. “Lady, how does the new year find you?”
She turned abruptly, evoking the dual weakness and strength of a small serpent in the grass. “How does it find any of us, when the shadow grows?”
“Is there a shadow, my lady?”
Éowyn glared, eyes sparkling in the night.
“From whence?” Gríma persisted. “Rohan casts the long shadow of its tradition.”
She nearly started to nod, but then her eyes narrowed and hardened. “Leave me.”
