Bogey-stories: Barrow-wight: 'My Love Shall Find Me Wrapped in Stars': Kortirion

Title: My Love Shall Find Me Wrapped in Stars - a drabble pair
Author: Kortirion
Character: A Ranger and A Lady
Rating: G
Source: Pre-Ring War
Disclaimer: Tolkien made Middle-earth, Kortirion made this drabble.

My mother said I must wed a lord... but none pass our keep, save raggedy rangers... diminished men, but I do not care.

I lie in my bed, watching the stars, dreaming of my lord. I shall be dancing through the stone pillars by moonlight and he shall think me Tinúviel. He will follow... bewitched by maiden’s song, enamoured of pale, slender limbs and clouds of silvery hair... Floating on the breeze, adorned with frost and starlight, my veils billowing like finest vapour, my sleeves trailing like mist across the Moon...
He will think me beauteous... and be mine... forever.

He stumbled into camp, white, trembling, eyes wild, teeth chattering so he could barely speak. The Captain ordered some brandy and someone bring blankets and warmed ale… Eventually he spoke...

"I... lost my path in the dark… found myself among the standing stones. A... sudden breeze… moaned in my ear, creeping mist swirled about me, hiding the stars. Cold, so very cold... Icy fingers stroked my hair, frosty breath scorched my cheek...
Then... then... I saw her face. Hollow-eyed, wide-mawed... shreds of ancient shroud billowed around her. She reached out with long bony fingers...

‘Mine’ she whispered, ‘Mine!’ ...and I ran!"
