The pond has frozen overnight and turns an opaque eye fringed by white, grassy lashes towards the sky. Eowyn lifts a large piece of ice and looks at her son through the cloudy pane.
The cracked surface makes his soft features distort and sharpen...and for a moment it seems the one looking back isn’t the boy she knows, but a stranger...watching from a place and time unknown. Eowyn shudders and the ice-sheet is crushed to smithereens. Elboron starts hammering the pieces together...happy...unconcerned.
Eowyn kisses the top of his hat and pulls him closer...away from the pointed shadow of the apple-tree.
