For the Wise to Know
Old men, I ask you! The greybeard wizard might think so, but 'twas no 'old man' like that pompous fool the herb-master who kept athelas, nor knew where it would be found.
I sent young Bergil down to Gammer Cirilwen's – she was long fled to Lossarnach, of course, but I knew under which flowerpot she would have carefully hidden her door-key, and which jars on her kitchen-sill held her dried herbs.
And when the grey-cloaked stranger crushed the leaves, I knew the fragrance; sharp and sparkling as a spring-morning, yet soothing as honey to a sore throat. King's foil, indeed.
“Then in the name of the king, go and find some old man of less lore and more wisdom who keeps some [athelas] in his house!” cried Gandalf.
… “Well now! Who would have believed it?” said Ioreth to a woman that stood beside her.
(RoTK, The Houses of Healing)
“Oft it may chance that old wives keep in memory word of things that once were needful for the wise to know.” (Celeborn, FotR, Farewell to Lorien)
