From the Grey Twilight
They've barely been gone a fortnight – no time at all, for a Ranger's wife; too soon to be looking to the horizon or losing sleep.
Yet she wakes in the grey morning suddenly frozen; cold in heart, and hand, and bone. For in her dreams she saw a great battlefield, and a river running red with blood; and then a looming wall of rock in which a dark door opened, and men and horses entered in. And just as he crossed the threshold, her husband – Halbarad – took one last look over his shoulder... and met her eyes.
And she knew.
“This is an evil door,” said Halbarad, “and my death lies beyond it.” RoTK, The Passing of the Grey Company.
