Beneath the Bitter Rain
Fire's always meant warmth, fellowship, safety; the First-Fruits feast, the great bonfires of mettarë. Now the bitter stink of rain-soaked ashes, charred oak and blackened elm, makes Erynneth clench her jaw on a wave of nausea. She stumbles over bodies of Orcs – and Wood-elves.
She remembers screams, shouts, a thousand arrows whistling, the crackle of flame. Hand-to-hand blades when her last quiver was spent. Blood's sticky in her hair and her head's splitting. When at last she wanders dazed back into the Elven-King's hold, she can only stare blankly at the gate-guards who insist that it's over; that they won.
“The realm of Thranduil was invaded, and there was battle under the trees and great ruin of fire” – LoTR Appendix B
