Dance of Death

As a child, she shadowed her older brother. The King smiled indulgently and ordered a blunted practice sword cut down for her use. The sword master taught both siblings the dance steps of deadly blades.

“Draw…parry…block…riposte."

"Again…and again..."

"Sheath swords.”

“Once more…draw…”

The years passed and their wooden swords gave way to fine steel, still they danced. Éowyn became an acknowledged shield maiden but felt entrapped within a silken cage of responsibilities to throne and family. A sharp tongue became her only weapon.

Now, isolated amidst the battlefield, she faced the undead foe and drew her sword one last time.
